This practical block-course takes place in the German Alps, within Berchtesgaden National Park and focuses on ecological patterns and processes along elevational gradients. Through field excursions, students will explore a range of ecosystems from the colline zone to the subnival belt, gaining a comprehensive understanding of habitat characteristics and climatic variation across elevation. Thereby students will develop and conduct their own small research project focusing on the patterns and drivers of species diversity, species traits, animal-plant-interactions and/or animal-related ecosystem functions along climate gradients. Additionally, the course provides insights into conservation activities within the national park, such as the species reintroduction and monitoring programs for golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and bearded vultures (Gypaetus barbatus).
